A Pair of Cuba-bound Aid Ships Reported Unaccounted For following Setting Sail from Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery mission is presently ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for a duo of unlocated boats loaded with relief goods journeying from Mexico to Cuba.
Naval Rescue Operations Launched
Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and reconnaissance aircraft to find the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting at least 9 sailors, per a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, the statement clarified.
Context of Relief to Cuba
The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island endures repeated national electricity failures.
"The skippers and their teams are experienced sailors, and both vessels are equipped with proper safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission commented.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Mexico said it has been in touch with maritime rescue coordination centres from those nations along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the authorities and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.
Earlier Humanitarian Mission
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received another boat that had carried a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the country.
That ship, called "a modern Granma" after the boat in which Castro came back to Cuba to begin the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered photovoltaic panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and food.
Larger Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have primarily led initiatives to bring humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, when a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation began.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over fifty thousand surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of energy rationing.
Diplomatic tensions have increased lately, with comments from various leaders underscoring the delicate nature of relations.
Responding to recent comments, a prominent Cuban official insisted that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using all of the resources at its reach to locate the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban government.
