Our team is analyzing images and video circulated this morning that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been digital alteration.
