The ice cream brand's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Product
The original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction of a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that co-founded the company alongside his partner, revealed that he will personally create this new flavor as part of a personal collection highlighting issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever and its ice cream arm the Magnum brand improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen revealed via social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, requesting public suggestions regarding the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
The watermelon has become an emblem of support for the Palestinian people because of its coloration, which closely resemble the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within the occupied West Bank.
The new product line will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that originally established several years back to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed that he plans to create other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development comes after co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at the company in September, after many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised after corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence ensuring that it can actualise its ethical purpose, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to journalists.
