What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 individuals lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have announced the number of fatalities remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 people with injuries were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are yet to be publicly named, but investigators think their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified to date.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Reportedly a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the statement continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
